At Excellent Dental Specialists, we have the experience necessary to ensure that your teeth look and feel their best, regardless of what issue you're facing. That's why, in order to help preserve even damaged teeth and maintain the structural integrity of your mouth, we offer a variety of restoration and repair options, including crowns and bridges.
What is a dental crown?A crown can be considered a "cap" for your damaged tooth. Note that crowns are made from a variety of materials, and can also be used to restore a damaged tooth to a strengthened and more attractive state. Crowns that are created from porcelain are usually used for front teeth which are easily seen, as the porcelain looks most like a natural tooth. When it comes to molars, or any teeth that experience a great amount of pressure, on the other hand, it is more useful to opt for a gold or composite crown that offers more protection against the stress that your bite can cause.
What is a dental bridge?A bridge is commonly used when a patient has missing teeth. They work by placing crowns on the teeth immediately beside the gap in question. The replacement tooth is then attached to these new crown-covered teeth, known as abutments, and is cemented into place. Much like the aforementioned crowns, bridges can be created out of a variety of material. Generally, however, both the caps and the replacement tooth itself are created out of porcelain or composite material that can be color matched to your natural teeth.
Why would I need a dental crown or bridge?Dental crowns and bridges are used in a variety of situations. Let's say that you experience some kind of trauma to your teeth and end up with one that is misshapen and discolored. In order to help protect this damaged tooth, a crown can be placed over it. This not only helps strengthen the tooth, but also allows you maintain the appearance of your smile. If you need to have a tooth extracted for some reason or otherwise lose a natural tooth, a bridge is a cost-effective option to help maintain the structural integrity of your mouth and prevent your remaining teeth from drifting around. Much like crowns, dental bridges can also be used to help maintain the appearance of your smile while also providing dental benefits at the same time.
How long will dental bridges and crowns last? When properly cared for, your dental bridges and crowns can last for well over a decade.
