Dental Crowns
San Antonio & New Braunfels, TX

Your teeth are an important feature of your mouth that perform some integral roles every single day. From biting and chewing, to speaking, even to smiling, your teeth are essential. They are also incredibly strong. Despite being the strongest substance in your body, though, the teeth are not invincible. They can still face physical damage or decay that can lead to not only aesthetic issues but oral health issues as well. When your teeth are damaged, Excellent Dental Specialists can restore them with crowns.

What is a Crown?

A crown is a type of restoration that resembles a cap in appearance. It is made to cover over the entire crown of a damaged or compromised tooth, surrounding it in complete protection. It helps to restore strength to the tooth, allowing it to function normally and extending its lifespan. In many cases, a tooth treated with a crown can last a lifetime, avoiding the need for extraction and subsequent replacement.

Reasons for a Crown

There are several reasons why a crown might be recommended. Reasons include
•  Teeth are cracked or fractured.
•  You have a tooth that is severely decayed and a filling may compromise its integrity.
•  You have a filling that has broken.
•  There are cosmetic imperfections in your teeth.
•  You have undergone a root canal treatment.

Types of Crowns

Crowns can be made from one of several different types of materials. Common materials for crowns include:
•  Metal. Metal is the strongest material available, and it is almost indestructible. However, metal is silver or gold in color, a major disadvantage that stands out quite obviously from the rest of your healthy teeth.
•  Porcelain fused to metal. PFM crowns are those that have a metal base with a porcelain coating. The metal surrounds the tooth, providing the tooth with incredible protection, while the porcelain provides a more natural appearance. A thin metal line is often visible through the porcelain.
•  Ceramic. Ceramic crowns are the most popular option due to their superior aesthetics. Made entirely from ceramic, these crowns can be made to look exactly like your real teeth. While not as strong as metal, ceramic can withstand most normal daily use.

What to Expect When Getting a Crown

It generally takes two separate appointments to place a crown. During the first appointment, the affected tooth is prepared. This process, done under a local anesthetic, is done to make the tooth smaller. It is necessary to ensure that your crown fits perfectly in with the rest of your smile. After the tooth is prepared, we take an impression. The impression is sent to our dental lab, where it is used to design and create your custom restoration.

It can take up to 2 weeks for the crown to be completed and sent back. A temporary restoration is placed while you wait to help provide the tooth with protection. Once the crown is ready, you come back for your second appointment. During this appointment, the crown is checked for fit and bite before being cemented into place on your tooth.

Benefits of a Crown

A crown provides you with several significant benefits.
•  Your tooth is protected from further damage.
•  Infections are prevented.
•  Strength is restored to the tooth, allowing it to function normally.
•  The need for a tooth extraction and replacement is avoided.

When your teeth have been badly damaged, a crown can restore their strength and their function, avoiding the need for a tooth extraction. For more information, call Excellent Dental Specialists at (210) 598-8933 today.
